“Mankind Is No Island” by Jason van Genderen

The video above won this year’s Tropfest NY competition and was also selected as the crowd favorite. Tropfest is “the world’s largest short film festival.” How do they know this? I don’t know, but I’ll take their word for it. 😉 Anyway, the videos have to be less than 7 minutes and must incorporate a “Tropfest Signature Item.” This year’s item was “sunflower.”

I liked this video’s message, but I was really impressed by its simplicity – both in concept and in execution. They shot the whole thing on a cell phone! And made it for just $57! I’ve gotta hand it to the human race…we sure can be creative and resourceful when we want to be. 🙂

Anyway, if any of you would like to find out more about Tropfest, you can visit their website here. If you’d like to find out more about the competition and how to enter next year’s, go here (you have to scroll down a little – festival guidelines are on the left). Aaaaand…for you budding filmmakers out there who are 15 or younger, there’s a separate festival for you! Go here to find out more and here for entry guidelines.
