Brainercise: Eddy edition version 3.0

Happy 2009 GBD!  My answer to the camel brainteaser is comment #21.  Eddy’s answer is comment #20.  And really, I don’t know where Eddy keeps getting these brainteasers, but I’m glad that they keep coming, because here’s another one!  Thanks Eddy!  Whoohoo!

Kathy wants to send something to Kristin in Thailand.  She has a safe box which she can put locks on and send, but if she locks it, Kristin won’t be able to open it.  She could send a key in the unlocked box and call Kristin and tell her to take the key and send the box back but then someone might copy the key or just take it.  So how can Kathy and Kristin solve this problem?

Now, I can’t speak for Kristin, but I’d like to make it clear to everyone that I am not, in fact, an alien.  But even if I were an alien, I don’t think that would have any bearing on this brainteaser.  Whether or not Kristin is an alien…well, you’ll just have to ask her.

Also, I’d like to think that I’m of a fairly stable mental state, and don’t make a habit of sending people disturbing things in locked or unlocked boxes.  So Kristin shouldn’t have to run away in fear once she sees I sent her something.  Just wanted to make that clear to everyone.

And last thing…I’m assuming that the idea of sending Kristin the key first, whether in the box or through some other method, is not going to work for the reason Eddy stated – that sending the key first opens you to the risk that somebody will either steal or copy the key.

Happy thinking everyone!

being an alien would make this riddle so much easier

  2. taylor nikole Says:

this is where combination locks and technology come in handy… ofcourse

you put a set combination lock on the box
and then text her the combo
gosh kathy its a whole new world :-p

*cough* i have absolutely no idea *cough*
i hide my stuipdity behind humor 😀

  3. Kathy Says:

@ taylor nikole – Being an alien would make everything so much easier, which is why they’re banned! Banned I say from the brainteasers!

A combination lock you say? I don’t see why that wouldn’t work. Unless Eddy says, “No!” lol.

  4. taylor nikole Says:

    aliens are cool kathy
you shouldn’t mess with the aliens

    eddy is in charge….

  5. jessica f Says:

how bout tape the key to the underside of the box? i dunno hahah.

  6. Binks Says:

    I GOT IT!!

    *drum roll*

You send the lock inside the box. BRILLIANT, EH?! ….no…?…..DAMN

    Epic Fail >_>

ahaha I suck at these brain teaser thing-a-ma-jigers. 😦

  7. taylor nikole Says:

    but binks
    the lock needs the key
    unless its a combo lock

what if we just take a trip to thailand!
    i’ve always wanted to go!
    woot woot
    makes everything soo much easier…

  8. Binks Says:

uhm…da key is inside the lock 😀 TA-DA!

Sure Tako. I’ll stuff you in the box and take you over dere, you better hope the box opens =p

  9. jessica f Says:

what if we carve a secret compartment on the side of the box, not readily visible to anyone. Then you can put the key in there and call Kristin. Yea? Geez I still don’t know. :/

  10. G Says:

Kristin doesn’t need a key, she can karate chop it open, durrrr.

  11. Kathy Says:

@ Eddy – These locks that I have…do you need a key to both lock and unlock the lock, or do you need a key to just unlock, not to lock?

  12. Kathy Says:

@ Eddy – Nevermind…it doesn’t matter. Same number of trips either way. lol.

  13. Jette Says:

Kristin sends Kathy a lock with a key and keeps a own key to this lock. Than Kathy can use that key to lock her box with the object and send it to Kristin. Now she can open the box.

  14. eddy Says:

Here are some answers to your questions:

@ taylor nikole – A combo lock would work, except that it wouldn’t take too much effort to get it open (I used to have one on my locker and it took my friends less than half an hour to get it open. It’s worth mentioning that they didn’t do it to steal anything, it was more of a Christmas present. They took out all my books and stuff and wrapped everything with gift wrap. They also put in some artificial snow, Christmas lights connected to a battery and a singing Santa!!! Can you imagine how difficult it was to find my books for every class? Did I mention that they even made a gingerbread house?). Yeah, so the point is combo locks are not safe enough.

@ jessica f – Secret compartments would be cool, unfortunately there aren’t any on this box and Kathy won’t be able to find a new one since the aliens were so fascinated by these “matter containers” and bought them all.

@ Kathy – You need the key to both lock and unlock. It’s a feature you specifically asked for since you have accidentally locked your keys inside before, remember?

Oh.. I forgot to wish you all Good Lock !

  15. Hammad Says:

Jette has it right, but I just wanted to say something:

This is the same principle behind RSA public/private key encryption. Kristin can send a lock (her “public key”) to anyone, in this case Kathy. She keeps the “private key” (the actual key) for only herself. Kathy then uses the “public key” of Kristin (her lock) to encrypt (lock) the box she has, and then send it to Kristin. Since Kristin owns the only “private key” for the lock, she is the only one who can open (decrypt) the box.

Public/private key encryption is really slow. Usually, it’s used only to send a symmetric key that is shared by two parties, and then that symmetric key is used to encrypt data back and forth between the two parties.

  16. G Says:

That better be something damn good in the box for all of this work lol. I say Kathy should also send Kristin a blow torch…

  17. eddy Says:

@ Jette – It wouldn’t be a good idea for Kristin to send the lock and the key since the key might be copied or if some alien at the post office is in need of a good lock and key, it might just take them both. The only way to be safe is to send valuable things locked inside the safe box.

  18. taylor nikole Says:

I’ve decided it would be friggin awesome if kathy were an alien…

  19. kristina Says:

    Dude this is too easy…
You put a rusty lock on the box and later, Kristin could bust it open with a hammer or something.
Sometimes its easier to just not think so hard lol 🙂

  20. Jette Says:

@ kistina: But alians also know how to use a hammer, don’t they?

  21. Kristina Says:

Okay, you got me. Didn’t think about the aliens Lol

  22. jessica f Says:

now we have aliens. Great, I am super confused now. I have no idea. I’m with tay and we can just fly to thailand and give it to kristin. HAHA

  23. taylor nikole Says:

hey then i can check one place off my list of places to go before I die…
its a win win situation 😀

  24. taylor nikole Says:

(and anyone else wanting to have a good laugh):
(and anyone else who wants to watch it… btw this has nothing to do with this post but yeah)
it just reminded me of your constant posting 😀
having to do with the news…

  25. jessica f Says:

    hahah same here tay. 🙂

  26. Charisse Says:

Send the locked box and key the same day but put the key on a separate envelope or something that won’t make it obvious its a key and then let Kristin know what it is for.

  27. Ayman Mohsen Says:

mmmm i donnu i came up with 2 things write now
1st , maybe she can send the locked box 1st then she can send the key (that is seperately)

or 2nd , she can send the locked box and kristin can use the screwdriver to turn the screws of the lock and take them off .

  28. Charisse Says:

so eddy, what’s your answer to this one???

  29. Kathy Says:

Charisse, the link to Eddy’s answer is in the current Brainercise post (version 4.0).
