The Story of Stuff

January 18, 2009

Hey hey hey GBD!

This is going to be the only post from me today because…well…because I’m busy.  lol.  This is something that I’ve been meaning to post for a while now, but never found a good time for it because the video is about 20 minutes long.  But don’t let that scare you away!  It’s a really good, informative video that introduces you to “the story” of our stuff…where it comes from, where it goes when we’re done with it, etc.  Some people might stop watching it after a couple minutes because they’ll think they’re in school again.  😉  But I think the host does a really good job of maintaining your interest about something that can get bogged down in details and bore the heck out of people.  So stick with it because I think most of us want to be aware of how our decisions affect the rest of our world and the people in it.  And don’t worry…it’s not like a super-depressing video that’s going to make you feel like crap.  Unless you’re from the States, like me.  Hahaha!  I kid, I kid.  Sort of.  Anyway, the point of the video is to encourage you to be more active and aware of the decisions you make when you buy stuff.

The video above is a teaser trailer for The Story of Stuff video.  If you’d like to watch the whole thing, click on one of the links below.

The Story of Stuff (English version)

The Story of Stuff (International version – includes many languages to choose from, like Spanish, Portuguese, French, Mandarin, Arabic, etc.)

Also, if you haven’t already checked out Chloe B’s introduction to Aberystwyth, Wales…what the heck are you waiting for?  Her post is a few posts below this one.  And keep ’em coming!  We’ve got one about Bulgaria from Megi, and one about Quebec from MarilyneL in the queue.  Whoohoo!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday GBD!

Movie Madness Monday: Wall-E

December 16, 2008

When this movie first came out, Kristin went to see it and IMd me after it was over, totally awe-inspired by the movie. In fact, she said “wall-e is sooooo good!” I didn’t see it until recently after it came out on DVD and I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree!

The movie was amazing considering there was probably like 20 lines of dialogue in the whole movie mostly consisting of “Wall-E” and “Eve.” The graphics work felt perfectly fit for the sci-fi nature of the film and “Eve’s” design felt like a real possibility. I’m such a geek!

More so than the cinemetography of the film, it’s also packed with a punch that’s easy to swallow. Okay, so it’s packed with multiple punches, starting with a love story reaching beyond differences, to environmental protection, to our ever-increasing ideology of a fast-food society and what that could mean when taken to an extreme. For me, one of the more poignant points was, indeed, the latter. It feels like citizens are always always looking for the absolutely most easiest route to take, and with the building of our technology, many are choosing to let technology do things that they could easily do. I’m totally guilty of this too. I’ve been in fast-food mode for the last couple of years and even on my diet my food has been what I consider “healthy” fast-food (hellllloooo Subway!). So now I’m thinking… what’s so bad about taking initiative and cooking, grocery shopping, and enjoying the fruits of my efforts in that way rather than running out to the nearest “healthy” fast-food place? I wonder if I’ll enjoy it more.

So, what stuck out for you?

Congrats!

Yellow!
A few weeks ago we featured Emily Jubenvill, the really lovely green girl. Well, she was up for the “Greenest Person on the Planet” award. It is our pleasure to let all you ladies know that she is in the top 5 worldwide and has achieved the honor of being the greenest person in Canada! Woohoo! In case there some of you who are not wanting to search for the previous post about Emily, I have embedded her Youtube video again… some of you, meaning primarily me.

AND here is a link to an article about Emily’s win…

It IS Easy Being Green!

July 13, 2008

A friend of ours has always spoken so highly of Emily, and we think that what she is doing is really rad… Sustaining our environment is something most of us value, but we don’t always know how to go about doing it. In the immortal words of NKotB, (for those younger than me– New Kids on the Block, who are attempting a come-back as we write this) “Step by step, oooo ba-a-by…” Yes, I am THAT cool. So check out the video, and feel free to share your thoughts, suggestions and questions… To vote for Emily, go to http:www.3rdwhale.com!
